Dr. Maldonado engages in a variety of qualitative research methods (e.g., narrative analysis, discourse analysis, ethnographic study) to determine how issues such as race and ethnicity, class, and gender affect communication in young children.  Specifically, he examines how these factors impact educational and therapeutic service provision and how practitioners, children, and families are affected by acts of bias, disparity, and social (in)justice.   Most recently, his work has focused upon the clinical training and service delivery practices of speech-language pathologists working with immigrants and refugee children.   In his spare time, Dr. Maldonado likes to travel with his husband and their children.  To date, he’s visited more than 30 countries around the world!

Dr. Maldonado’s teaching and research focus on the diagnosis and treatment of childhood speech and language disorders.  His work investigates ways in which speech-language pathologists can optimize communicative competencies and maximize functional interpersonal skills in young children.   Dr. Maldonado also explores multicultural aspects of communication disorders and early childhood education.  He has lectured throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia, discussing educational and therapeutic service provision models for culturally and linguistically diverse populations.  Still maintaining an active clinical caseload as a licensed and certified speech-language pathologist, Dr. Maldonado’s work as a practitioner has spanned more than two decades.
