The undergraduate program in speech-language pathology prepares students with a strong foundation in normal acquisition of speech, language, and hearing, and provides an introduction to the field of communication sciences and disorders. The master's degree is required for the initial teaching certificate, the license to practice speech-language pathology, and the Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) awarded by the American Speech-Language Hearing Association. The master’s degree program in speech-language pathology is accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CAA) of the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA).
Admission Requirements
Students are eligible to apply for admission to the department as freshmen. If transferring into the SLP program as a sophomore or junior, a minimum GPA of 2.0 or better is required for admission.
Learning Outcomes
Students will:
1. Demonstrate knowledge of the biological sciences, physical sciences, statistics, and social/behavioral sciences
2. Understand normal speech, language, hearing, and communication.
3. Understand the nature (etiology and characteristics) of communication disorders and its relationship to other disabilities.
4. Understand the relevance of cultural diversity and globalism and their impact on communication disorders.
5. Critically analyze a selected body of literature in communication sciences and disorders
6. Demonstrate good writing skills across the discipline, including but not limited to essays, research papers, literature reviews, labs, and observation reports using APA style.
7. Collaborate effectively with others on in-class and out-of-class projects to understand the roles and responsibilities of those involved on a team.
8. Describe aspects of language in typically developing school-age children
9. Identify a variety of clinical techniques/strategies for improving an individual’s communication abilities.
